Things to consider before deciding which security cameras to purchase
The development of Security Camera technology has improved dramatically over the past few years.
Here are a few things to consider when deciding on security cameras for your home. This is a large topic with many camera types on the market. We will focus on the dome type cameras for you home.
Fixed or variable focus. What does this mean?
A fixed focal length is set and cannot be changed. The distance to the objects you want to view from the camera will determine which fixed lens is best suited. The most common size is 2.8mm giving you a wide angle of viewing.
Variable focus cameras is where the camera has a motorised lens typically from 2.7mm to 13.5mm. These cameras give a wider range and can provide more detail at greater distances.
Night Vision
It is difficult to use camera manufacturers specifications to compare different brands effectiveness at night time. There are lux level specifications which can indicate how the camera can process low light situations. The problem we find is that varying brands and models do have slightly different grain quality when the lux level ratings are similar.
Most of the cameras use Infrared spotslights built in that assist with night time viewing and recording.
Advanced Artificial Intelligence
Newer camera models now have very sophisticated Artificial Intelligence (AI) when processing the images. A notification can be sent to your phone when motion is detected. This motion can be differentiated between a person or a motor vehicle.
Wired or Wireless
A typical professional installation will often result in security cameras being wired back to a network Video Recorder (NVR). This eliminates any issues that may result in wireless cameras dropping off the network. The better method is to have all security cameras hard wired.
